Bye Bye Dentures !

Bye Bye Dentures:
Lower Back teeth are most important Teeth for chewing .Loss of these back teeth becomes difficult to treat.Generally in the abscence of back teeth a removable denture is made;which is many a times bulky ,hurts the gums, has to be removed at night and replaces chewing efficincl by about 25% only. These problems are solved by IMPLANTS.The teeth replaced seems just like your natural teeth and replaces your chewing efficiency to the original .As they are submerged in the Jaw bone the patients actually get the feel of chewing into the food and is appreciated within the jaw.Continuous stimulation of jaw prevents the jaw from thinning[often seen in elderly with missing teeth] and helps to maintain the Jaw volume.Happy Chewing !

Teeth In a Day

One of the more recent, cutting edge technologies developed by Brånemark that is now available to many patients is Immediate Load or Immediate Placement dental implants.

This unique procedure enables patients to be fitted for crowns on the same day (or within 2-3 days for some cases) the implant device is installed.

There is no typical 3-6 month waiting period for the implant site to heal or stabilize via osseointegration (titanium implant post fuses with jawbone).

These has greatly influenced the way in which Dental Treatment was perceived by the patient as well as the Dental Surgeon.

Of Course this is exciting but it has its own limitation and can have failure rates as high as 30% in hands of inexperienced Dental Surgeon. The Dentists has to be very particular about Case selection,Diagnosis,Treatment Planning and of course Treatment protocols.

Sugar Free Chewing Cum Can Prevent Cavities!

American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance Awarded to Chewing Gum

New Category Recognizes Oral Health Benefits

CHICAGO, September 25, 2007—After a rigorous review process, the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs has awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley sugarfree chewing gums Orbit, Extra, and Eclipse, because they are clinically shown to help prevent cavities, reduce plaque acid and strengthen teeth. To be considered for the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance, products must withstand demanding review in a variety of areas. Among other things, manufacturers must:

*
Supply objective data from laboratory and clinical studies that support the product's safety, effectiveness and promotional claims
*
Submit ingredient lists for review and approval
*
Provide evidence that manufacturing and laboratory facilities meet ADA standards

Studies submitted by Wrigley to the Council on Scientific Affairs showed that chewing these gum products for 20 minutes three times a day after meals increases saliva production. Saliva helps neutralize and wash away plaque acid and bathes the teeth in minerals such as calcium, phosphate and fluoride which are known to strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities.

“When you see the ADA Seal on the package of a dental product, you can rest assured that an independent team of experts has evaluated scientific evidence and has concluded the product meets the ADA’s criteria for safety and effectiveness and provides oral health benefits, said ADA Executive Director Dr. James B. Bramson. Now, consumers know that if they chew gum that carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance, they are actually doing more for their oral health than just freshening their breath.”

Other products that have been demonstrated to provide a health benefit and have been awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance include toothbrushes and toothpastes, dental floss, and mouth rinses. For optimal oral health, the ADA’s daily oral hygiene recommendations are as follows:

*
Brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
*
Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner Eat a balanced diet and
*
See your dentist regularly

Cleaning & Polishing of Teeth

The American Dental Asssociation recommends the following for good oral hygiene:

* Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.
* Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay–causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. This helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
* Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
* Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Antimicrobial mouth rinses and toothpastes reduce the bacterial count and inhibit bacterial activity in dental plaque, which can cause gingivitis, an early, reversible form of periodontal (gum) disease. ADA-Accepted antimicrobial mouth rinses and toothpastes have substantiated these claims by demonstrating significant reductions in plaque and gingivitis. Fluoride mouth rinses help reduce and prevent tooth decay. Clinical studies have demonstrated that use of a fluoride mouth rinse and fluoride toothpaste can provide extra protection against tooth decay over that provided by fluoride toothpaste alone. Fluoride mouth rinse is not recommended for children age six or younger because they may swallow the rinse. Consumers should always check the manufacturer’s label for precautions and age recommendations and talk with their dentist about the use of fluoride mouth rinse.

Talk to your dentist about what types of oral care products will be most effective for you. The ADA Seal on a product is your assurance that it has met ADA criteria for safety and effectiveness. Look for the ADA Seal on fluoride toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, interdental cleaners, oral irrigators, mouth rinses and other oral hygiene products.

Chilli as an Anaesthetic

A new chilli-based local anaesthetic that appears to prevent pain without causing numbness could have a huge impact on dental treatment, according to the British Dental Health Foundation.
The Foundation welcomed the work of the research, which was carried out by Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and said the new anaesthetic could make procedures quicker, simpler and more convenient.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the BDHF, said: ‘Of course this research is still in its early stages but it could form the basis of a massive step forward in the battle against dental phobia.
‘According to our own surveys around one in five people who do not visit the dentist make this decision because they have a fear of pain.
‘Although dentistry today is already pain free, some people find the numbness caused by current anaesthetic quite uncomfortable and because their mouth feels unnatural they might perceive the treatment as potentially more painful experience than they otherwise would.
‘It is important that people visit the dentist regularly, as often as their dentist recommends and so anything that can make the experience more convenient and comfortable is welcomed by the Foundation.'
The chilli anaesthetic was created by scientists from a combination of capsaicin (the natural compound that makes chilli peppers hot) and a derivative of the local anaesthetic lidocaine. It works by selectively blocking pain-sensing neurons without interfering with other types of neurons, meaning that the subject doesn't feel any pain but still reacts in the same way to other sensations such as touch or movement. It has only been tested on rats so far.
Dr Carter added: ‘Anaesthetics are most commonly used for treatments such as fillings and root canal work. Therefore if people find the numbing process uncomfortable then by far the best way to avoid it is for them to take care of their oral health so that they do not require treatment in the first place.'

Caring for Your Baby's Mouth

The best time to learn about your baby's teeth is before they grow into his mouth. At birth, the baby's teeth are completely formed inside the gums. His first set of teeth are important, because he needs them to chew and to learn to talk. They will also affect whether or not the permanent teeth grow in properly. You, with your dentist's help--can help your baby to have a healthy smile.

Mouth Care

Even before the teeth come in, clean the gums, tongue, and soft tissues of your baby's mouth every day with a soft, wet washcloth wrapped around your finger. After the baby's teeth come in, use a small, soft toothbrush. Toothpaste is not necessary, but a small amount with fluoride can provide additional protection. It is up to you to protect your baby's smile until you can teach him to brush his own teeth.

Diet and Dental Health

As soon as your child gets teeth, he can get cavities. Cavities can cause baby teeth to fall out early. When this happens, your child may experience crooked permanent teeth, speech difficulties, poor self-image, or loss of appetite.

Never put sugar water, "Kool-Aid," or soft drinks into baby's bottle. When feeding, hold the baby in your arms -- never prop the bottle. A propped bottle will cause the liquid to remain on the baby's teeth. Also, never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk, formula, fruit juice, or sweet liquids. These will promote cavities.

Dental Visits

Dental visits should begin when your baby is one or two years old. The dentist will check for cavities, clean and fluoride the teeth, and teach you how to care for your child's teeth. your dentist will also let you know how often your child should be seen for regular dental checkups.

Fluoride

Fluoride in the drinking water helps the teeth develop while they are still under the gums. It is important to check to be sure the water you and your family drinks has enough fluoride. If you water supply does not have enough fluoride, your dentist may prescribe fluoride tablets or drops. If you are breast-feeding, your child's doctor may also prescribe fluoride drops.

Tooth Eruption Pain

  • Try to determine if the pain is from a loose primary (baby) tooth pinching the gum tissue or due to an erupting permanent tooth. Refer to the tooth eruption chart.
  • Prolonged pain (over one week) is unusual and may be caused by inflammation around an impacted or partially impacted tooth. This periodic, prolonged pain is fairly common with eruption of first permanent molars and third molars, or wisdom teeth. A dentist should be consulted for definitive diagnosis.
  • An aspirin or aspirin substitute* can be given for the temporary relief of pain in dosages according to weight or age. (Aspirin placed directly on the affected area will cause a chemical burn to the tissue.)
  • A cold compress or a piece of ice wrapped in a 2 x 2 gauze square can be directly applied to the eruption site. Due to the numbing effect of the cold, this method can provide temporary relief - 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
  • If the pain persists, contact the parent/caregiver and recommend a dentist be consulted.

Burning Mouth Syndrome Facts About 1.3 million American adults, mostly postmenopausal women, are afflicted with Burning Mouth Syndrome, a chronic often debilitating condition whose cause remains a medical mystery.

Burning Mouth Syndrome Study: Controlled Open Trial of the Efficacy of Alpha-Lipoic Acid (Thioctic Acid) on Symptomatology

Femiano F, Gombos F, Scully C, Busciolano M, Luca PD. - Stomatology Clinic II, University of Medicine and Surgery, Napoli, Italy.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), is a potent antioxidant mitochondrial coenzyme, the trometamol salt of thioctic acid that has been shown in clinical studies to be neuroprotective. This study examined the effect of ALA on the symptomatology of Burning mouth syndrome (BMS). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients with BMS and no clinical or laboratory evidence of organic oral disease were divided into two groups (Test and Control) each of 21 subjects, matched for age and sex. The Test group were given ALA (thioctic acid; Tiobec) for 30 days, as 600 mg per day orally for 20 days followed by 200 mg per day for 10 days. The Control group were given cellulose starch 100 mg per day as placebo for 30 days. All BMS patients were reviewed at 10- day intervals and scored for changes in symptomatology. RESULTS: Significant improvements were shown in the symptomatology of BMS in up to two-thirds of patients with BMS receiving alpha-lipoic acid, in about 15% of those using placebo and also in up to two-thirds of those who, having tried placebo, were switched to ALA. We have examined the effects on 4 groups of 20 patients with BMS of ALA, compared with bethanecol, Biotene and placebo, and found ALA of remarkable benefit with minimal adverse effects.

This was a double blind, controlled study conducted for two months on 60 patients with constant BMS. Comparing alpha-lipoic acid (test) with cellulose starch (placebo), there was no laboratory evidence of deficiencies in iron, vitamins or thyroid function and no hyperglycaemia. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Following treatment with alpha-lipoic acid, there was a significant symptomatic improvement, compared with placebo, with the majority showing at least some improvement after 2 months, thus supporting the hypothesis that burning mouth syndrome is a neuropathy. This improvement was maintained in over 70% of patients at the 1 year follow-up.

How to chose a Dental Surgeon?

A question most overlooked !!!

Surprisingly a good competent Dental Surgeon can be objectively identified.

1] A good reference by a friend or a relative is a reasonably good start.
2]A dental surgeon who works with appointments and is reasonably good at time management.
3]Has a neat and clean clinic.[This indicates his commitment towards sterilization.]
4]Consultation includes Diagnosis,Treatment planning, explanation of dental procedures with the help of Computer software and Brochures,Appraisal of Charges involved, Choices Involved,Time and the number of visits involved.
5]Delivers what has been promised.
6]Has a back up in his absence.

All these are pretty good indications of the Doctor's commitment to his profession.

In Principle ,Dentists are supposed to be people who relieve you of dental problems;but somehow Dental Treatment has become more painful than the Dental Problem !!!

If this is true then it's time to look for another dentist.....
